The University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s basketball team did two things better than the previous game — surpassing a season-low 26 percent shooting clip from the field and finding a way to slow Chelsea Haskey.
It wasn’t enough.
St. Martin’s walloped the Vulcans 80-53 in a non-conference game on Saturday at UHH gym, relying on a productive bench.
Subs Kirsta Stabler scored 18 points, Megan Wiederman 15, Angela Gelhar 13 and Liz Mills 12 to lead the Saints (7-3), who shot 42 percent.
McKenzie Mangino scored 11 points on 5 of 10 shooting to lead the Vulcans (2-5), who converted 35 percent from the field, including just 2 of 15 from 3-point range.
UHH also struggled at the free throw line (15 of 27 for 56 percent) and on the glass, getting outrebounded, 42-32.
Kamie Imai didn’t start, but added nine points in 21 minutes. Thea Hanato-Smith had eight points.
The Vulcans trailed 39-22 at halftime, but at least held Haskey, who scored 18 points on 8 of 16 shooting on Friday, to just four points. In the first half, she went 0 of 4 from the floor, including 0 of 2 from long distance.
However, the Saints have more than one player who can score. Stabler came off the bench and posted 14 points in the first half. Haskey finished with nine points on 1 of 7 shooting.
